Appalachian Drafting, LLC is a structural and miscellaneous steel detailing firm based in Abingdon, VA. It was started as a leap of faith in 2016 by Steven Harris where he worked out of a spare bedroom in his house. In 2017, he moved out into an actual office and started adding to his crew.

Our extremely talented team at Appalachian Drafting or “Appa D” now has grown to 5 detailers and an office manager. What separates us from other detailers is the wide range of shop and field experience that we bring to the drawing board. Our detailers have worked as fitters, certified welders, crane operators, and riggers. That experience has allowed us to, at times, add performing our own field measuring for existing structures and 3D scans to our scope of work.

As the company has grown, we have also widened the net of projects that we do. We have had jobs from Maine to Florida and as far west as Colorado Springs, CO in the United States and have also had a job in Canada. Much like the 3D drawings that we do, Appalachian Drafting is not a one-dimensional company. We have earned a reputation for specializing in unique structures. We have worked with coal, high-end glass railing feature stairs, spiral stairs, and helical ramps.

“Appa D” does not just focus on one type of construction like many other detailing firms, but they have the ability to perform work in all facets of construction, including residential, commercial, and industrial. Our jobs have ranged from a residential house to the stair package for a new practice arena for an NFL football team. Our largest project to date has been 5,000 tons and over 1.6 million square feet.

“Appa D” utilizes the best 3D modeling software in Tekla Structures. We also have the capability to do 3D scans and can use the Microsoft HoloLens. We are proudly American owned and operated.
